ANDES actively works on issues of biodiversity conservation, indigenous rights, and sustainable development. Furthermore, we promote the horizontal exchange of experiences and policies which value traditional and indigenous knowledge and contribute to the global dialogue on climate change.
Our Mission: Promote a conservation and sustainable development approach based on the Andean principle of Sumaq Kawsay through the implementation of Biocultural Territories.
Our Vision: Create local capacities and strategic responses to the socio-economic, cultural, ecological and political effects of the globalization process on local communities, as well as the protection of their resources, knowledge and the rights associated with these resources.
Paradigmatic
- A paradigmatic approach is implicit in their ‘decolonizing and emancipatory approach’ and their grounding in the Andean principle of Sumaq Kawsay — they are guided by a different worldview
Integrated
- e.g. biocultural heritage project links biodiversity, cultural diversity, and spiritual diversity.
- e.g. the Yachay Kuychi Pluriversity is “an education initiative which aims to create holistic approaches to learning and collaborations between western science and indigenous knowledge” and focuses on “epistemological diversity and innovative education for indigenous and non-indigenous peoples alike”
Pragmatic
- Their concrete objectives include: Conserve agrobiodiversity; Strengthen food security; Improve livelihoods; Protect biocultural heritage
